Bloomingdale’s Experiments with Smaller Store Format

The department store is trialling a smaller 22,000sq ft store format in Virginia, called ‘Bloomie’s’.

The Bloomie’s name comes from a nickname that New Yorkers have been calling Bloomingdale’s for years and the strategy of adopting a smaller store format is in keeping with a strategy outlined previously by parent company Macy’s. The strategy would see Macy’s and their other brands Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury deviate from the traditional mall format and look to reinvigorate the retail scene by introducing new, exciting and fresh concepts.

The introduction of the Bloomie’s format will see the closure of more than a hundred stores, with smaller-format locations heading to open-air centres in their place.

A Bloomingdale’s spokesperson commented: “Bloomie’s is Bloomingdale’s new store concept which brings the energy, discovery, and fun of Bloomingdale’s to a smaller, highly edited and service-driven location.”

The store will open at the Mosaic District in Fairfax, Virginia this coming autumn.
