Cardiff Bay to Host New Immersive Theatre

The Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) has announced ambitious plans to build a 550-capacity immersive theatre in Cardiff Bay.

Positioned on a site opposite the existing WMC, the new venue will harness cutting-edge digital technologies, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), to deliver transformative storytelling experiences. This development marks a significant step forward for Cardiff Bay’s cultural and technological landscape, further solidifying its status as a hub for creative innovation.

The proposed venue will be a “digital-first” space, integrating immersive technology to create novel audience experiences. Unlike traditional theatre, immersive performances blend digital and physical elements to draw spectators into the narrative. Technologies such as VR, AR and mixed reality (MR) will allow audiences to interact with their environment in new and engaging ways, creating a sense of presence that goes beyond passive observation.

The theatre forms part of the larger Cardiff Live development in Atlantic Wharf, a transformative project to enhance Cardiff Bay’s infrastructure and attractions. In addition to the immersive theatre, the £250M redevelopment includes the Cardiff Indoor Arena, council offices, exhibition spaces and community areas.
