Charles & Keith unveils concept store in Kyoto

In a strategic move ahead of its Tokyo flagship launch slated for the first quarter of this year, Charles & Keith has unveiled a captivating concept store in Kyoto. The store, a product of a collaboration with the renowned David Chipperfield Architects Milan, is strategically situated along Shijo-dori, Kyoto’s bustling shopping belt.

A distinctive feature of the duplex store is its facade, thoughtfully crafted with panels sprayed with lime-based plaster, creating a textured exterior. The interplay of rough-textured walls against semi-polished reconstructed stone floors adds a touch of sophistication to the space.

Giuseppe Sirica, associate director at David Chipperfield Architects Milan, shed light on the design philosophy, emphasizing the creation of a space with sculptural qualities that gracefully enhance the brand’s products. The aim was to establish an environment that exudes sobriety and elegance, where the interplay between furniture and architecture is seamless.

Inside the store, eye-catching design elements abound. Display tables, crafted from translucent carmine-red and emerald-green resins, create a mesmerizing ornamental effect. The aesthetic is further heightened by rounded sofas adorned in a luxurious burgundy fabric.

Noteworthy is the careful attention given to the store’s facade. The lower section serves as a decorative filter, skillfully blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. Meanwhile, the upper facade boasts a rough Japanese plaster finish, underlining the authenticity of the pre-existing building.

This unveiling in Kyoto sets the stage for Charles & Keith’s forthcoming Tokyo flagship launch, indicating a well-thought-out expansion strategy within the Japanese market. The concept store stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to not just retail, but to the creation of immersive and culturally resonant spaces that elevate the overall shopping experience.
