A privately held company that has operated internationally for fifty years, Chenot is based in Switzerland and specialises in the health wellness and hospitality sector. Here, RLI speaks with Dr. George Gaitanos, COO of Chenot to discuss the concept of the brand and what lies ahead for the company.

Chenot currently operates nine properties across the world. The newest property within its selection is the Chenot Palace Weggis, which opened on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland on 11 June.

This year will also see the openings of Chenot Espace at One&Only Portonovi in Montenegro in October and the Chenot Spa at One&Only Desaru Coast in Malaysia.

The remaining properties in the Chenot portfolio are the Chenot Palace Gabala in Azerbaijan, the Chenot Espace at Albereta Relais & Chateaux in Italy, the Chenot Spa at the Grand Resort Lagonissi in Greece, the Chenot Spa at the Elounda Beach Hotel in Greece, the Chenot Spa at Chenot at Selman Marrakech in Morocco and finally Chenot Spa at Barvikha Hotel & Spa in Russia.

“The past year has comprised of several milestones for the business and we worked extremely hard to ensure our new facilities or properties open safely without sacrificing the renowned Chenot experience,” explains Dr. George Gaitanos, COO at Chenot. “The launch of Chenot Palace in June was a great success despite the added obstacles of a global pandemic and we have taken every measure to prioritise the safety of guests and staff while providing the same level of five-star service and personalisation guests have come to expect of us.”

Despite the ongoing concerns of the coronavirus, the opening of the latest property was only delayed by a month and the key objectives for the remainder of the year have not changed. The two additional properties planned for the year will open as planned, while further investment into its research and development arm will be made to ensure they continue to offer the most innovative and advanced retreats and properties available.

During lockdown, the company maintained communication with its guests via social media, providing as many updates as possible about its global destinations and doing their best to bring the Chenot experience to guests virtually.

When discussing how the business looks for new properties and what attracts them, Gaitanos explains that with the opening of its latest venture, they were looking for a location in the heart of Europe that is also easily accessible for travellers, yet also has the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the other Chenot properties. Weggis in Switzerland became the perfect choice as it is a small-town set on Lake Lucerne, with spectacular scenery of the Swiss Alps, fresh mountain air and a quiet and charming city nearby. “The active and sustainable lifestyle the location allows for reflects Chenot’s health wellness principles and philosophy which is rooted in balance and harmony of the body, mind and the environment,” explains Gaitanos.

Broken down into three different types of property, Chenot offers Chenot Palaces, Chenot Espaces and Chenot Spas. Each of these has their own unique offering that caters to every individual’s need and type. Chenot Palaces are their dedicated resorts, Chenot Espace properties are mainly housed in luxury partner hotels and resorts and have a more of a flexible approach, while Chenot Spas offer a la carte treatments and specially designed programmes that last for three days.

So what lies ahead and what is the greatest challenge facing the company at the moment?

“It was certainly challenging opening in the midst of a global pandemic; however I am very proud of the brand and the team for coming together to open another amazing property in such unprecedented times.”

Gaitanos goes on to say that the greatest challenge for the business will always be to stay one step ahead and continuously innovate so that guests have the best possible experience.

“The ultimate value of Chenot, in an increasingly stressful world, is that we shine a light on the importance of investing in mental and physical health in order to achieve a high performing, strong, healthy and well-balanced life,” Gaitanos concludes.
