Cineworld Announces Closures

The news of temporary closures of their locations puts 5500 jobs at risk.

The ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the entertainment sector and although cinemas across the UK have implemented a set of health and safety guidelines including social distancing, one-way systems and floor markings and signage, they continue to be hard hit by delays in the release of big-budget films.

Phil Clapp, Head of the UK Cinema Association, commented: “Although cinemas opened in July and have been able to deliver a safe and enjoyable experience, without major new titles then we understand we aren’t able to get as many people out of the home as we’d like.”

Mooky Greidinger, Chief Executive said: “Cineworld will continue to monitor the situation closely and will communicate any future plans to resume operations in these markets at the appropriate time, when key markets have more concrete guidance on their reopening status and, in turn, studios are able to bring their pipeline of major releases back to the big screen.”
