Coles to Trial BYO Container Scheme

Set to take place at the Fitzroy supermarket in Melbourne throughout this week, the Coles Group is trailing a bring-your-own container scheme.

This scheme will allow shoppers to load up on items such as soaps, coffee and shampoo in a much more environmentally-sound way. This new announcement means customers will be in a position to utilise their own containers for certain ‘scoop and weigh’ products and came ahead of World Environment Day which took place on 4 June.

“To achieve our goal of being Australia’s most trusted retailer and creating long-term shareholder value, you can’t do that if you’re not going to be sustainable,” Coles’ Chief Sustainability, Property and Export Officer Thinnus Keeve told the AFR. “We’re under no illusions we’ll need to work together to achieve some of these targets, we cannot do it ourselves.”

“We are committed to innovating when it comes to packaging so that where we can’t eliminate packaging and plastic, we are ensuring it’s contributing to the circular economy by being produced with recycled content where possible, as well as being recyclable,” Keeve continued.
