Covid-19 UK News Update

UK Governmet Response

The number of coronavirus related deaths in care homes has increased, with 2,000 deaths recorded in the week up to April 17th by the Office of National Statistics.

The Financial Times’ analysis of the new figures suggests that the virus has caused more than twice the number of deaths than those recorded in the daily figures from hospitals. The FT estimates that more than 47,000 people have now died from coronavirus.

The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, has recommended that all Scots wear face coverings in shops and on public transport. Coverings do not need to be of a medical grade, and items such as a scarf will suffice. The UK government is expected to make a similar recommendation in the coming days.
