Disney Will Close North America Stores to Focus on E-Commerce

The company has announced that they will be undertaking a downsizing effort which will see them close at least 60 Disney Stores in North America.

The entertainment giant currently operates around 300 stores across the globe. The brand intends to remain flexible and adapt its retail strategy as necessary; and this means that the company intends to close stores across North America, instead focusing on ways “to best meet the needs of consumers when and where they want.”

A number of Disney Stores in US malls have struggled in recent years, and this has been a significant contributing factor in the company’s decision to close stores. Of note, the closures will not affect the more than 600 stores in Disney Parks, in-store shops in stores such as Target and other lifestyle and outlet locations.

Stephanie Young, President of Disney’s consumer products, game and publishing speaks on the news: “Over the past few years, we’ve been focused on meeting consumers where they are already spending their time, such as the expansion of Disney store shop-in-shops around the world. We now plan to create a more flexible, interconnected e-commerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all our franchises.”
