Dollar General to Expand Popshelf Concept

The retailer plans to open 50 new Popshelf stores by the end of the year, exceeding initial plans to open 30.

The new Popshelf concept was launched last year to target women shoppers in ‘diverse suburban communities’. The concept allows Dollar General to capture sales from a customer outside its traditional core offering. Most items in Popshelf are priced below $5 and categories include seasonal, home décor and beauty produce alongside cleaning supplies and party goods.

According to Chief Executive Oficer, Todd Vasos, early results from Popshelf stores ‘far exceeded our initial expectations for both sales and gross margin.’ The performance of the newly-launched concept store has prompted Dollar General to accelerate their expansion plans.

The plans to open more Popshelf stores is part of a broader expansion strategy for Dollar General which will see the brand open around 1,050 stores this year. Both this expansion and the expansion of Popshelf come off the back of an exceptionally successful year for Dollar General, which was amongst the retailers that thrived during the pandemic.
