Domino’s Testing Autonomous Delivery

The world’s largest pizza retailer is piloting autonomous delivery at one of its store locations in Houston.

Beginning this week, Domino’s Pizza will allow customers who place prepaid orders on selected days and times at their Woodland Heights section of Houston, the opportunity to have their pizza delivered by a Nuro self-driving R2 Robotic vehicle. Customers who are able to utilise the service will still receive text alerts, which will update them on R2’s location and provide them with a unique PIN to retrieve their order. GPS tracking is also available to monitor the vehicle.

Once R2 arrives, customers will enter their PIN on the robot’s touch screen and the doors will safely upon upward, revealing the customer’s order.

“There is still so much for our brand to learn about the autonomous delivery space,” said Dennis Maloney, Domino’s Senior VP and Chief Innovation Officer. “This program will allow us to better understand how customers respond to the deliveries, how they interact with the robot and how it affects store operations. The growing demand for great-tasting pizza creates the need for more deliveries, and we look forward to seeing how autonomous delivery can work along with Domino’s existing delivery experts to better support the customers’ needs.”
