After seven years in Macau, fashion retailer H&M is to close its last physical store there, at The Venetian Macao.
The brand says it will transition its business in the Chinese territory to its online shop, hoping to increase online sales.
“As we have reached the end of the lease of this H&M store in The Shoppes at Venetian Macao, in mutual agreement with the landlord, we have decided to move out of this location,” said a communications and press department spokesperson for H&M Asia.
The H&M Venetian Macao outlet took up 19,000sq ft of space across two floors and hosted sporting legend David Beckham at its launch.
H&M subsequently opened another, larger Macau store at the Promenade in Galaxy Macau, however that was closed last year due to geopolitical differences of opinion relating to allegations of human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province.
“Having stores in the right locations has always been fundamental to the success of the company, so reviewing and making changes to our store portfolio is something we do continuously across all markets,” the spokesperson added.
