The Architectural firm have utilised canes of bamboo in celebration of the bar’s Japanese menu and Chinese location.
Located in Beijing, Dongshang Bar celebrates its Asian heritage by offering a number of sake and whiskies from Japan along with a selection of Japanese dishes. Imafuku Architects wanted to incorporate this celebration of Asian culture by integrating a number of bamboo features into the design of the bar.
Bamboo has been utilised throughout different elements of the bar – the long corridor that leads into the bar have been adorned with thin strips of bamboo with a selection of these arching up to form a lattice across the ceiling. Bamboo is also utilised in Dongshang’s main area with canes of the plant being arranged into a cross shaped pattern canopy.
The studio commented: “The history of planting and using bamboo in these two countries can be traced back to ancient times. Both Chinese and Japanese people have utilised bamboo as a material for construction, furniture, containers and event art pieces. Dongshang invites guests on a story of traditional aesthetics and crafting techniques of the two countries through the contemporary reinterpretation of bamboo.”
