According to parent company, BGF Retail Co, the Korean convenience store CU has opened its first-ever store in Malaysia.
The new store is located on the ground floor of the Centrepoint Bandar Utama in the Kuala Lumpur district. Occupying an area of 165sq m, around 60 per cent of the newly opened store offers traditional South Korean food and beverage items as well as snacks and other miscellaneous convenience store items. The store also carries the brand’s CU private label offering which boasts Korean street-food items.
Ready-to-eat food items available at the store include traditional bingsu and tteokbokki (rice cakes), corndogs, pumpkin double soft serve ice cream, Korean fried chicken, gimbap, Samyang spicy noodles and bread and pastries. Bento boxes with rice, bulgogi beef, fish cakes and kimchi are also available to purchase.
The opening in Malaysia is a partnership between BGF Retail and Mynews Holdings, one of Malaysia’s leading convenience store chains. The pair have intentions to open around 50 CU stores in Malaysia within the first year with long term plans to open more than 500 within five years.
