Lockdown to ease next week in Leicester

The latest local lockdown in Leicester is set to be eased next Friday with the opening of some non-essential shops.

It has been announced by the government that the local lockdown that has been imposed on Leicester will begin to be eased on the 24th July, however this doesn’t mean that all shops and businesses on the high street will be allowed to re-open immediately.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes are the ones that will suffer as they will not be allowed to re-open, while schools and non-essential shops will be able to.

Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, who previously claimed that data provided to city officials highlighted that only 10 per cent of Leicester had shown higher transmission rates, said he was “bitterly disappointed” by the announcement.

“I am not surprised by this decision but remain extremely frustrated that a sledgehammer approach is being taken to deal with an issue in a very small part of the city,” he said. “Now that we finally have the very detailed data we have been calling for over the past few months, we can take targeted local action to get the virus under control, without the need for the force of law or a full city lockdown.”
