Primark to Cut Jobs

The fast fashion retailer has recorded a rise in sales during the Christmas period, but still remains behind pre-pandemic levels.

Despite a 36 per cent increase in sales year-on-year during the 16 weeks to January 8, Primark has warned of potential job losses after revealing plans to simplify their in-store UK retail management structure, which owner Associated British Foods (ABF) said was part of an “ongoing programme to improve the efficiency of our store retail operations.”

Compared to pre-pandemic levels, Primark has recorded that total sales during the period fell by 5 per cent, while like-for-likes dropped by 11 per cent. The brand, like many others, has been impacted by store closures across the UK and Europe as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In its core UK business, like-for-like sales were 10 per cent down on pre-pandemic levels and stores in retail parks were the only ones to achieve growth on a two-year basis.
