Spanish retail sales plunged in March amid coronavirus lockdown

Retail sales in Spain plunged more than fourteen percent in March, when the country went into lockdown to contain the coronavirus. The drop, the biggest in data that go back to 1996, reflects the closing of non-essential businesses and restrictions on movement apart from shopping for certain goods, such as food and medicine.

The impact has been seen across Europe, leaving many businesses in danger of collapse, and forcing governments to announce rescue loans and other programs.
