The UK Government has announced the scheme which will see tax free shopping come to an end on December 31.
In a time where brands are trying to remain resilient and competitive in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the news of the Government’s new scheme has not been well received by many retailers and brands given that the number of international visitors to Britain has already drastically reduced. This is expected to take a further hit now as many brands worry that the UK will lose its allure to many shoppers who love to take advantage of the tax free shopping offered in the country.
Any oversea visitors will no longer be able to obtain a VAT refund on items purchased in the UK and taken home in their luggage. As well as this, UK airports will no longer offer duty free across the fashion, beauty and accessories sectors, however is still does remain available for alcohol and tobacco.
The UK will now become the only country in Europe not to offer tax-free shopping to its international visitors.
