Tesco Looks to Compete with Amazon Fresh

The UK-based supermarket giant has moved into autonomous store technology to compete with Amazon as it continues to open grocery stores in the UK.

The grocery giant is set to deploy its Trigo powered autonomous store system to a second UK location after a successful launch in its head office Express store in Welwyn Garden City. The retail intends to roll out the checkout less store concept to more of its stores as Amazon Fresh stores seem to be sweeping the country, boasting their ‘just walk out’ technology.

The Welwyn store was the first cashless store from Tesco. It is fitted with cameras and a selection of other equipment to ensure it can function as an autonomous supermarket.

Tesco Chief Executive, Ken Murphy commented: “We have a system installed in our Express store in Welwyn Garden City, and we’re extending that to another store to check it in a more urban environment. It’s been opened about a year now, and it’s working really well, one of the joys of machine learning it is continuously improving so we’re feeling confident that we can put it into another store with a higher traffic.”
