Walmart to Trial Drone Deliveries

Should the trial be successful, drones will deliver groceries and household items across the country.

Initially being trialled in North Carolina through a partnership with Flytrex, an Israel-based drone company, the grocery giant is looking to new and innovative ways to bring the Walmart experience to an even larger audience. The drones can carry packages weighing up to 6.5 pounds and can travel for 6 miles according to Flytrex, and will land in customers’ back yards.

The process is easy for customers, explaining how the process will work the company said: “customers process their order on an online ordering app, where they are also able to track the delivery progress. The package is loaded in the drone’s delivery box; the drone takes off and follows its predetermined route to the customer’s backyard.  Upon arrival, the customer approves package release, and the drone safely lowers the package on a wire until it reaches the ground.”

Should the trial be successful in North Carolina, the retailer will look to roll out the drone deliveries on a much larger scale however expects it to take ‘some time’.
